Most people in the modern world are missing one thing: green veggies. Now that it’s spring it is time to buy (or grow!) some fresh raw veggies and incorporate them into your diet to improve your mood, help out your body, and crowd out those other not-so-good-for-you foods.
Greens are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and vitamins A, C, E, and K. They are loaded with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll, and many other micronutrients and phytochemicals. Leafy greens are essential to a healthy body and immune system.
For those of you who want to shed a few pounds, leafy greens help detox the liver, the fat-mobilizing organ.
I get it, a leafy salad every meal can get old. Plus (and this might just be me), they can be hard to eat! Ever try to get the last bit of salad onto your fork along with the rest of the walnuts? Chopsticks would be easier.
Introducing the Green Smoothie
Smoothies are a fast and easy way to get in fresh, raw fruits and veggies. Here’s a simple ‘formula’ for making yours:
Liquid Base + 3:1 Ratio of Veggies and Fruits + Healthy Fat + Protein + Bonuses
Here are some examples of each:
filtered water, coconut water, or nut milk
3:1 Ratio of veggies to fruits
Veggies: 1 stalk celery, 1/2 cucumber, baby spinach, baby kale, or other mixed greens
Fruits: banana, pear, mango, or berries
1/2 an avocado, a spoonful of nut butter, or a handful of nuts
1 Tablespoon chia seeds, hemp seeds, or ground flax seeds
1 teaspoon maca powder, or raw cacao
A pinch of cinnamon
The addition of the fat helps with the absorption of the nutrients, and the protein powder allows you to use the smoothie as a meal replacement, keeping you fuller for longer. Smoothies still contain the fiber from the plants while juices do not. Smoothies also give our digestive system a break as we often don’t chew our food enough.
